Chapter 6

Authors:  Linda McCauley, Sharon Pappas, Rose Hayes

This chapter addresses longstanding barriers to teaching and practicing nursing innovation, and it offers strategies that nursing leaders may leverage to empower nurse-led innovation across their organizations. The authors explore challenges and possible solutions through the lens of a unique case study: the Emory Nursing academic-practice partnership and its mission to cultivate a workforce of digitally enabled nurse leaders who have the tools and confidence to disrupt health systems that no longer work. We discuss the partnership’s tactics, teaching methods and scalable models for nursing innovation, particularly as they relate to the design of an Academic-Practice Innovation Hub called the Emory Nursing Learning Center. We offer practical take-aways for nursing leaders aiming to implement similar initiatives, as well as resources like Project NeLL (a big database and suite of data science applications) and Emory Nursing Experience (our continuing education enterprise) so that nurses of all levels can have the means to bring bold ideas for health system transformation to life.
