Healthcare teams have demonstrated tremendous impact on clinical outcomes, provider and patient well-being while lowering healthcare costs. Nurses play a critical role on healthcare teams facilitating important teamwork processes, including communication and coordination. Traditional methods of studying teams have kept integral members of the healthcare team hidden, especially for non-billable providers, such as nursing and other healthcare providers. The electronic health record, a rich source of big data, captures real-time clinical outcomes and is a tremendous resource for capturing the impact teams have on clinical outcomes and further, allows for more accurate capture of team member attribution. Using pertinent examples from the national landscape and emerging big data science, this chapter provides an overview of how to study and measure healthcare teams and team member attribution more accurately using the EHR.
