Digital transformation in healthcare, a frequently discussed topic especially fueled by the pandemic, has been key in driving large and unprecedented changes in our digital platforms. Yet we know healthcare has still significantly lagged behind in implementing digital strategies as compared to banking, airlines and other consumer-based buying. Digital transformation for nursing, and healthcare in general, is an essential building block for patient-centered care. It helps to streamline day-to-day care, to foster understanding of our patients’ wishes or preferences in their plan of care, builds loyalty and trust with our patients and community, and improves the work life of our teams and clinicians within very complex and challenging environments. Consumers are demanding digital transformation. Likewise the need for and use of big data have never been greater. This chapter addresses the paramount opportunity for nurse executives to lead digital transformation, and highlights exemplars experienced during the pandemic.
